The Team Power-Up retrospective helps your team identify energizing new habits, eliminate energy drainers, and reinforce what keeps you moving fast. It's perfect for boosting team spirit and sprint velocity.
When to use this template
Use Team Power-Up when your team needs a morale or momentum boost, especially after a slump or before tackling a challenging sprint. Great for resetting team habits and injecting fresh energy.
How to facilitate
Start with a quick team check-in by asking everyone to rate the current team energy and speed, either via a simple poll or icons on the board.
Introduce each column: Power-Up Starters for new energizing habits, Energy Drainers to call out what slows the team down, and Keep Charged for things already fueling your momentum.
Give everyone 5–7 minutes of silent brainstorming to add notes to each column, encouraging contributions in all areas.
Move to group discussion, inviting team members to clarify and expand on their posts, clustering similar ideas as needed.
Facilitate a group vote on which Power-Up Starters and Energy Drainers should be top priority for the team.
Agree on concrete next steps: adopt 1–2 new habits, commit to dropping 1–2 blockers, and acknowledge key practices to keep doing.
Wrap up by revisiting the initial energy vote, asking if the session empowered anyone to adjust their outlook or habits.
Pro Tips
Encourage honest sharing about what drains energy—remind the team this is a safe space.
Balance action with positivity by celebrating what’s ‘charging’ your team as much as flagging issues.
Use emojis or color coding to make key actions and blockers visually stand out, increasing engagement.
Prompt quieter team members with direct, positive questions to ensure diverse input.
FAQ
How do we encourage teammates to be honest about energy drainers?
Normalize that all teams encounter blockers and frame the conversation around mutual improvement, not blame. The facilitator should model vulnerability and positivity.
What if we generate too many Power-Up Starters to action at once?
Prioritize two or three that are most impactful and achievable this sprint. Revisit the remaining ideas in future retros.
Our team is remote—how do we keep everyone engaged?
Keep the session interactive with fun visuals and activities, and check in frequently for input so quieter members feel included.
Can this format work for large teams?
It works best for small to mid-size groups. With large teams, use breakout groups to maintain focus and energy.
